Abstract

The root-knot nematode is a big problem of economic food crops in Taiwan. It is widely spread in almost all of sandy soil fields. To establish an integrated system for the control of the nematode is the ultimate objective of our researches.

Abstract

The International Meloidogyne Project (IMP) was funded initially for two years (June 30, 1975-June 30, 1977) by the Agency for International Development through a contract with North Carolina State University. The IMP was established to initiate a comprehensive, worldwide study of the biology, ecology, pathogenicity and control of root-knot nematodes. These pests are serious pathogens on a worldwide basis, and are limiting crop production capabilities in many developing countries. Because accurate identification of field populations is essential for control, initial efforts or the project are involved in improving identifications techniques, along with the study of species distribution and pathogenic variation within each species.

Abstract

One group of plant-parasitic nematodes that is very important is the root-knot nematodes, Meloidogyn spp. This is because these nematodes are not only world-wide these nematodes are not only world-wide in distribution but also have a very wide host range and cause considerable damage to economic food crops. And, therefore, effective but practical and economical control measures against the root-knot nematodes must be developed. However, before an effective control program strategy can be developed the species and biotypes of root-knot nematodes present in the area must first be known, hence this study.

Abstract

Only a few species of plant parasitic nematodes were first recorded in Thailand almost 20 years ago. Root-knot nematodes were not, at that time, considered a serious pest due to the limited number of nematologists in the country who had not made extensive surveys.

Abstract

Crop rotation is an old age farming system that effective in controlling plant-parasitic nematodes. By manipulating the cropping pattern which is basically a 2-crop system which includes crops that are non-hosts, farmers have effectively used this approach to reduce nematode population increases there by shifting the focus to more intensive land utilization and the use of advanced technology. Among the approaches, multiple cropping as a means of effectively utilizing farm resources and technology has caught the fancy of both the farmer in the tropics and the agricultural scientists.
